Scouts Attend County Hunger Games Camp

Date: 27th Oct 2019 Author: West Monkton

Taking place at Huish Woods, over 200 Scouts enjoyed a weekend packed full of activities at the Somerset County Scouts Hunger Games, supported by a small army of adult volunteers. Inspired by the film, Scout Groups that registered for the weekend, arrived at Huish Woods and signed themselves in as part of the Reaping Ceremony. Despite the rain, tributes navigated around 8 bases during Saturday day time and were tasked to skin a rabbit, show strength through a Javeline throw and combating the Gauntlets, practice their aim with Angels and Archery, navigate around woodland in the dark and learn how to prepare and cook a Mackerel over open flame. Showing great resilience during the day, Scouts earned sponsors along the way, collecting points at each base from their performance to score on a leaderboard.

Credit to those leading activities to keep spirits high and to those back at the campsites managing the additional volume of wet clothing and chilly Scouts! 9 pm on Saturday night marked the official start of the games where Scouts were tasked to avoid capture by hunters out in the woodland. The game that over 200 began came to a close at 12:30 pm where the 25 who the night were revealed.

The event was a huge success with many Scouts asking the dates for next year! It is opportunities like these that develop the skills of the Scouts such as self-reliance, teamwork and being active outdoors, all providing Skills For Life.

“Let me begin by saying this camp was Amazing! The thought and effort is shown by the amount of enjoyment we had. My favourite part was starting ‘game’ on the Beacon field.“ Isobel – Scout

“Thank you for letting us come on the hunger games camp. This was my last Scout camp and thank you for making it the best.”
